ANSI Z87.1 Markings for Safer Eye Protection

A pair of glasses can look ready for the range and still fall short for the job. That is why ANSI Z87.1 markings matter. The small code molded or printed on a lens, frame, temple, or side shield tells you whether the eyewear was tested for occupational and recreational eye-protection requirements - and, just as important, what level of impact protection it is intended to provide.

For shooting, hunting, shop work, riding, and tactical use, do not buy based on lens color or wraparound style alone. Read the marking, confirm the components belong together, and choose protection that matches the hazard in front of you.

What ANSI Z87.1 Markings Tell You

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is a U.S. standard for occupational and educational eye and face protection. Eyewear that complies with the standard is tested as a protective device, not simply sold as a pair of sunglasses. The standard covers factors such as impact resistance, coverage, lens retention, and side protection.

The marking does not mean every pair is built for every hazard. A clear lens marked for impact is not automatically a welding filter. A pair with a tinted lens is not automatically the right choice for low-light shooting. The code is a starting point for selecting the right equipment, not a replacement for thinking through the task.

You will usually find markings in one or more of these places: the lens near an outer edge, the inside of the temple, the bridge, the frame front, or a removable side shield. They may be small, so use bright light and inspect both the frame and lenses before relying on the eyewear.

Z87 vs. Z87+

The plus sign is the detail many buyers are looking for. In common safety-eyewear markings, Z87 indicates basic impact protection, while Z87+ indicates high-impact protection under the applicable ANSI standard.

High-impact-rated eyewear is generally the better fit for active situations where flying fragments, ejected cartridge cases, ricochets, brush, debris, or fast-moving objects are realistic concerns. That includes many shooting, hunting, tactical, workshop, and outdoor activities.

Do not assume that a heavy-looking frame or a thick lens carries a high-impact rating. Look for the actual Z87+ marking. Also, inspect the whole assembly. Protective eyewear works as a system: lens, frame, retention, and side coverage all matter.

How to Read ANSI Z87.1 Markings on Glasses

A marking can include more than one letter or number. The exact format can vary by product type and by edition of the standard, but the codes help identify the performance features built into the eyewear.

For non-prescription safety eyewear, you may see Z87 or Z87+ on the lens and frame. For prescription safety eyewear, a Z87-2 marking is commonly used to identify prescription-rated components. A plus sign added to the appropriate marking indicates high-impact performance.

That distinction matters if you wear corrective lenses. A regular prescription frame with standard lenses is not automatically safety eyewear just because it has side shields attached. Proper prescription protective eyewear must be made and marked as a compliant system.

Some lens markings also identify specialized filters or lens functions. Depending on the product, you may see codes associated with UV filtering, variable tint, visible-light filters, infrared filters, or welding filters. These markings are useful when a task calls for a specific filter, but they should never be guessed at from the lens appearance.

For example, a smoke lens may improve comfort in bright outdoor conditions, but its darkness alone does not prove a particular UV or filter rating. A yellow or amber lens can enhance contrast for some environments, but it is not automatically safer for every range condition. Always choose lens color around light conditions and target visibility after confirming the protection marking.

Why Frame Markings Matter Too

It is easy to inspect the lens and stop there. Do not. Frames and side shields are part of the protective package.

A high-impact lens needs a frame designed to hold it during impact. If your eyewear uses removable side shields, replacement lenses, or interchangeable temples, use the parts intended for that specific model. Mixing parts from different glasses may affect fit, coverage, and rated performance, even if each piece looks similar.

This is especially relevant for shooters and hunters who keep multiple lenses for clear mornings, bright afternoons, and low-contrast conditions. Swapping lenses is practical, but a replacement lens should be made for the exact frame and preserve the eyewear's intended protective configuration.

Markings Are Not the Same as Fit

ANSI compliance is critical, but a correct marking cannot fix a poor fit. Glasses that slide down your nose, leave major gaps around the eyes, or interfere with earmuffs are more likely to get removed when you need them most.

For range use, check that the temples sit comfortably under hearing protection and that the frame does not block your sight picture. For hunting, look for enough coverage to reduce wind, dust, and brush exposure without excessive fogging. For cycling, fishing, or riding, secure fit and peripheral coverage become just as valuable as impact protection.

Lens fog is another practical issue. A pair that meets the rating but fogs up during movement can reduce awareness and become a distraction. Anti-fog treatment, airflow around the frame, a clean lens surface, and the right face fit all help. Conditions still matter - humidity, temperature changes, and face coverings can challenge any eyewear.

Common Mistakes When Checking Safety Glasses

The first mistake is treating “ANSI rated” in a product description as enough information. A credible product should identify its standard and show markings on the eyewear itself. Look closely at product images and inspect the glasses when they arrive.

The second is confusing UV protection with impact protection. Both are valuable outdoors, but they address different hazards. UV filtering helps manage sun exposure. Z87 and Z87+ markings address protective eyewear performance. One does not automatically confirm the other.

The third is assuming all safety glasses are appropriate for ballistic threats or specialized industrial hazards. ANSI Z87.1 high-impact protection is not a blanket claim for every projectile, chemical splash, laser, welding, or extreme-heat application. If your worksite, range, or activity has a specific requirement, follow that requirement and use gear rated for that hazard.

The fourth is continuing to wear damaged eyewear. Deep scratches, cracks, loose lenses, bent frames, worn temples, and missing side shields can compromise visibility, comfort, and performance. Replace damaged parts with compatible replacements, or retire the glasses when their condition is questionable.

Choosing the Right Marking for Your Use

For many recreational shooters, hunters, and tactical users, high-impact Z87+ eyewear is a sensible baseline, paired with a lens color that fits the light. Clear lenses work well for indoor ranges, dawn, and overcast conditions. Smoke or gray lenses suit bright daylight. Amber, yellow, or contrast-enhancing options can be useful in changing terrain or flat light, though personal preference and target conditions play a role.

For shop tasks, yard work, and general debris exposure, choose eyewear based on the tool and hazard. Grinding, cutting, or work with substantial side exposure may call for more coverage than a standard spectacle-style pair. For chemicals, splashes, or fine dust, goggles or face protection may be the better choice.
